AutoCAD to BIM Conversion for a Multi-Story Commercial Complex
Upgrading 2D Drafting to Intelligent BIM with Treknocom’s Revit Expertise
Introduction

The Client, a developer managing a mid-sized commercial campus project, needed to transition from traditional CAD workflows to BIM. The project involved three identical five-story buildings requiring full-model conversion from AutoCAD to Autodesk Revit. The goal was to achieve high-detail modeling (LOD 400) to support downstream coordination, approvals, and the generation of shop drawings.

Treknocom was brought in to execute the BIM conversion with minimal disruption to the project schedule and to align models across all architecture, structure, and MEP disciplines.

The Challenge

The project introduced several challenges:

  • 2D to 3D Transition: Converting legacy 2D AutoCAD drawings into a fully parametric and intelligent BIM model.
  • LOD 400 Modeling: Meeting high-detail standards to support procurement, fabrication, and construction workflows.
  • Multi-Building Alignment: Ensuring consistent modeling across three identical structures while accounting for site-specific variations.
  • Tight Delivery Window: The conversion had to be completed on time to integrate with ongoing design development and coordination reviews.
The Solution

Treknocom deployed a multidisciplinary BIM team to deliver accurate and coordinated Revit models from AutoCAD inputs:

Intelligent Model Conversion
  • Interpreted 2D AutoCAD drawings to model five-story buildings with all architectural, structural, and MEP elements
  • Maintained parametric accuracy and detailed families in Revit to meet LOD 400 specification
  • Standardized modeling approach across the three buildings for consistency and speed
Clash Detection & Coordination
  • Used Autodesk Navisworks to perform clash checks and resolve overlaps across all disciplines
  • Issued periodic clash reports and integrated feedback from client-side consultants
Cloud Collaboration & Documentation
  • Enabled Autodesk Construction Cloud for drawing markups, milestone reviews, and version tracking
  • Delivered LOD 400 documentation, including detailed schedules, annotations, and sheets aligned with contractor needs

Technology Stack
  • Autodesk Revit – Parametric BIM modeling across architecture, structure, and MEP
  • Autodesk Navisworks – Clash detection and coordination
  • Autodesk Construction Cloud – Model reviews, markups, and document control

Result
  • On-Schedule Conversion: All three buildings were modeled and delivered on time with LOD 400 fidelity
  • BIM-Ready Outputs: Detailed models enabled coordination, quantity extraction, and documentation with minimal post-processing
  • Streamlined Collaboration: Cloud-based tracking and issue resolution ensured transparency and faster approvals
  • Consistent Quality Across Buildings: Identical modeling logic helped reduce turnaround time and avoid duplication errors
